| BJJ Globetrotters Newsletter // June 2016 | |
Dear Globetrotters,
Last month marked the beginning of a super intense summer of camps, and what a beginning it was :) The contrast between a camp in ice cold Greenland and then sunny Italy was really fun to experience. Next up is our mega-camp in Belgium in 9 days with more than 250 people which is going to be something completely different, again.
Speaking of, I better get back to the spreadsheets and emails for that camp, so I'll leave you with the newsletter for now. Hope you enjoy it! :)
Have a fantastic day, | |

| Our fourth Beach Camp in El Salvador is announced! |
We welcome anyone, regardless of team, affiliation and experience to join the BJJ Globetrotters Beach Camp in Casa Kickapoo, El Salvador. This is the world’s most luxurious paradise get-away for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners, held in one of the most beautiful and exotic places we could find on earth. And it’s easy to get to with a relatively short flight from several major airports in the United States. We are cutting absolutely no corners for this camp and everything is taken care of for you in this all inclusive week, where the only thing you have to do, is to show up at the airport. |

You will leave here already planning your next trip…! - Jennifer, Uganda
Here is a riddle for you: What does a Japanese businessman, an American working in the Foreign Service, and a Ugandan break-dancer all have in common? |
…They do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the middle of lush Uganda! (This is the BJJ Globetrotters after all)
The Japanese businessman and the break-dancer we’ll save for later, but the American is Jennifer Anderson from Atlanta, who works for the US foreign service and recently transferred to Kampala, the bustling capital of Uganda.
Igniting the BJJ craze When Jennifer first arrived in Kampala she had no hopes of training BJJ since nobody knows about it there. Instead she started out by joining the local Taekwondo school. Then one day something happened.
“I was doing Taekwondo and trying to explain what BJJ was and the 6th degree blackbelt instructor was like: show me! So I did!! " Jennifer tells and continues to explain how what started out as mere curiosity from the Taekwondo master quickly turned into a BJJ craze. |
Getting help from the Japanese businessman and the breakdancer!
“He was hooked and every day would ask to learn something new. Soon he had me lead warm-ups for TKD practice with some of the BJJ moves, then asked if I could show some basics so the kids could learn some self defense. One thing led to another and now we've got two weekly practices with upwards of 40 people attending”
But being a BJJ enthusiast with a white belt on her way to blue belt, and with little teaching experience, she was hoping for others to join her efforts. Luckily, a couple of people did exactly that.
“The really cool thing is that this has turned into a group effort. So now a Japanese businessman in town who is a Judo expert is teaching throws and sweeps, and a Japanese internationally ranked wrestler will start helping teach takedowns and weight distribution. There's even a professional Ugandan break-dancer who is helping people tone their core and getting the community involved so we can put on a self-defense series in August.”
Jennifer with her kids...(well not really, but she explains that wildlife is absolutely amazing, and that it's a short drive from where she lives and trains) |
BJJ has a future in Uganda Asked what the future looks like for BJJ in Uganda, Jennifer is quite confident that it will continue growing. “The group of athletes here - and don't be mistaken: Ugandans are incredibly naturally athletic and it'll knock your socks off - is really passionate about BJJ and has described it as their new addiction. It's caught on like wild fire! We practice no-gi since no one can afford a gi, and even after practice is finished, they will keep rolling with each other for over an hour just because they love it, coaching each other to get techniques right/tighter. It's truly inspiring.“
And you can be a part of it!
In the day-to-day training Jennifer still manages her best as a white belt, and is therefore reaching out to the BJJ community inviting anyone to join them and teach.
“What I'd really love though is if someone with some REAL BJJ expertise could come out and help train people, including me! I live very close to the gym, and would be happy to provide food/lodging, but wouldn't be able to help bring anyone out... they'd have to do that part on their own. But Uganda is AMAZING, with lush rolling green hills, incredible wildlife, great people, tons of fruits/veggies, and lots of opportunity. If someone were looking for something exotic to try, Uganda is the place to find it.”
That’s an open invitation to the Globetrotters community right there!

Find out more... Jennifer can help with food and lodging, and we browsed some air tickets to find out that you’re looking at around € 650-750 for a return ticket from Europe depending of season.
Find out more by contacting Jennifer by email or via Kampala Grappling Club on facebook. Now go get that adventure :-)

Come run away from the cold winter together with us! The tiny island of Saint Barthelemy in the Caribbean used to be a hideout for pirates before Sweden and France invaded. Today it is usually off limit for anyone but Hollywood celebrities and the super rich, anchoring the world’s biggest yachts and staying in ultra expensive luxury hotels.
Working closely with the local St. Barth Jiu Jitsu club, we’ve managed to book a newly built accommodation facility there and will be hosting our second Brazilian Jiu Jitsu camp on the island! A full week of training, surfing, exploring, beaches and sailing that you don’t wanna miss. |

| BJJ Globetrotters affiliated Academy in Focus: Inuit Martial Arts in Nuuk, Greenland |
We recently and rather spontaneously decided to do a camp on Greenland. An incredible place with great hosts and amazing scenery, and with one of the more remote gyms on the planet we can say without lying. That doesn't stop them from expanding, and even enjoying visits from a couple of travelers once in a while. The Inuit Martial Arts run by Jason Nystrup is our affiliated academy in focus this month.
Name: Jason Nystrup
Age: 29. 20 inside ;) Belt: Purple
Profession: Jiu Jitsu Instructor/Oral surgeon/Dentist
How many years in BJJ: 7 years on and of. Had to take some time of when I was studying.
Other martial arts: Inuit wrestling. I also know how to do a no punch KO ;)
Where do you live: Nuuk.
Where are you originally from: Nuuk.
Jason, we suspect very few of the readers have had the opportunity to visit Greenlandplease, so please tell us a bit about the place you live Nuuk is an awesome place. You look forward to every season as every season is special ! You can pretty much do everything here. From skiing high in the mountains, to sailing and hiking in beautiful scenery. Nothing beats it in my opinion, but Iceland comes pretty close as it looks a lot like Greenland on some places of the island.
We believe you...every single picture we see from Greenland is stunning. How did your gym come into existence in the first place, and what kind of people train there? I always wanted to spread the BJJ gospel in Greenland. No one had ever done it before and no one knew what BJJ was. So I started from complete scratch and started up Inuit Martial Arts.
Most of the people that train here are college students, but we also have some local guys with regular jobs. The first blue belt we received in the club is a licensed hunter ;)
They all seem to like the sport and the knowledge of defending themselves. Also it’s great cardiac training.
Google tells us that there are 56.483 people in total on Greenland. And then a couple of Polar bears. We can imagine you must have some challenges running a BJJ gym in such a small place - how do you see the future for BJJ up there? Even though we have the biggest town, it’s still hard to keep people training. A lot of people come through the gym, but most of them don’t stay because the have too much ego or simply put too lazy. BJJ isn’t for everyone so it can overstep a lot of boundaries for some people.
But I still see a good future! The interest is slowly growing. It’s all about patience and I’m here in Greenland to stay, so I’m not gonna go anywhere.
Does that mean you have a national tournament in Greenland :-)? No, but I hope we will get one in the future as BJJ is already spreading in Greenland ;)
What should a fellow globetrotter do if they wanted to visit you guys? Contact me on facebook. You can live at my place with free accommodation. We can use some sparring partners ;)
What would you recommend Globetrotters to see in your area apart from the inside of your gym? Nature. Greenland has the most unique nature. It depends on which season you choose. Everything is possible from sailing to snowmobiling ;)
Thanks a lot, Jason, and good luck with your future endeavours! Thank you for your time ☺

This wasn't even supposed to be an actual camp, but with a quick decision we had about 15 people fly to Greenland with just a few weeks notice. The training was great, but we also got to really experience the place from the perspective of the locals and made some true friends there, who we are all looking forward to come back and visit again next year.
Greenland is by far the most remote and unique place we have ever done a camp. Proof that any corner of the world has amazing experiences and friendships awaiting you!
Join us next year, or just get on a plane and go train/stay with Jason and his friends (see interview above) :-) |
